Hi Stan
Can you send this out to the Rummer network.
Can anyone recommend a pest control service for Carpenter Ants or does anyone have any advice on what to do about them?
We think we have them in the eves or beams of the outer roof.
Thanks
GJ and IG
I had good luck with Diazinon a few years ago.

First of all they can be controlled, but you should address this problem quickly. We used an extermination service, but the company we used is no longer in business. There are several companies that advertise regularly about carpenter ants.
One of the methods they used was to drill a series of small holes in our siding all around the house and inject a chemical into the walls. Carpenter ants live in the ground, they just work in your house, so the extermination company will find the paths they use to move from the ground to the house and treat those areas. They will also advise you to keep any vegetation at least 4” away from the house. Apparently they can jump that far from bushes. Also, any wood that connects the earth to the house should be removed, such as expansion joints in the cement for sidewalks or driveways that run right up to the house and you can substitute gravel or something else to fill in the gaps.
When we had our roof replaced with a membrane roof, as everyone seems to do eventually, extensive damage was discovered in a lot of our decking. That’s the wood you see inside that is also the roof. That had to be replaced. There was some beam damage, but it was not to the point where it was structural, so the roofing company cleaned it out and replaced it with some kind of filler before they put new decking down back over the beams. As a side note, they then put down 3” of solid foam insulation between the decking and the membrane, because we had no insulation in the roof. That has helped a lot both in the summer and the winter.
After everything is taken care of, regular extermination applications on the exterior areas of the house seem to control this and other insects.
A few years ago a house down the street had a huge tent put all around the house and then was filled with some sort of gas I suppose that killed everything inside. Your extermination company can advise you what’s the best way to treat your problem.
I can tell you that our work was done about 4 years ago and we have not had any further problems with carpenter ants, or with the roof, so these methods do seem to work.
Good luck with this problem.

Yes I had carpenter ants this spring.
I use Barrier Pest Control (Sherwood), 503-625-0657, to spray to kill the nest.
I highly recommend them. (I have them on a quarterly plan, since 2006 - I think a good investment for a Rummer).
A couple of years ago, the first time we had the ants; Barrier found a wood ground borders in the yard that had the nest. We removed that wood from the yard. We think that some of ants moved their nest to a fence. Last summer we had all the ivy around the fence remove and the ants moved again - to the house!!
When they were in the house, every morning in the shower, there would 3-5 ants walking around.
It took a couple of sprayings and ~ 5 weeks to kill the nest in the house.
Good luck

Carpenter ants are serious, if they get into your ceiling they are very serious. As our homes do not have attic space it's very hard to remove ants once they get established in the ceiling. Over the years we have had carpenter ants, the ant service was effective for a few years each time. Once we started noticing ants in the ceiling we signed up for quarterly service and have never had a problem since.
We use Guaranteed Pest Control (Beaverton) 503-646-2119. They have been very reliable and professional.

We've all had that problem. It goes with the turf.
Number one, pull any wood away from the house. That includes any plants, trees, firewood, etc. These ants make nests in the wood.
Use gravel not bark chips along the edge of the house, etc.
I used Nature 1st pest control - 5793680 -for the least toxic approach but I'm sure there are several more natural choices out there. They use chemicals but less toxic.
Watch out for the yearly contract approach. Two treatments should do it if they know how to locate the nest by following the ant trails. It involved drilling tiny holes in siding and putting bait in the walls.
Good luck,

G and I,
We've been in our Rummer home for 40 years. We were really bothered with carpenter ants in the beginning. What a problem! But we soon found Guaranteed Pest Control Service and our days of ants were over. We have them on a regular quarterly service now and haven't seen an ant in years. They spray inside and out and if we ever see even one ant they will come and re-spray without cost. We highly recommend them. Another plus - they've had the same fellow doing our work for years. They are in Beaverton and their phone number is 503 646-2119.
AL and SL
PS. Forgot to mention - when we had our house reroofed some years ago, we had them come out at the time the old roof was removed and treat the entire area before the new roof was put on.
AL and SL
PPS. Oops - Steve reminded me that we have had two types of ant infestation. The carpenter ant problem was in our bathroom wall and Guaranteed Pest took care of it completely. The other problem is with sugar ants and that is controlled by the quarterly treatments.
AL and SL
Sounds like you need to have a roofer check if you have rot. We did and had to replace a third of our roof. We put on a lifetime membraine roof (basically a pond liner) and have been absolutely happy in every regard since. We used A-1 Roofing, the owner is Troy. Can’t remember the last name, but they’re in Beaverton. No more carpenter ants EVER. Barrier pest control is the best we have ever found for ants. We live in Lake Oswego where there are trees galore and sugar ants are a problem for just about everyone here in our neighborhood. Especially problematic for us because of the radiant heat. Since we hired Barrier, they spray quarterly with eco-friendly stuff we rarely if ever even see one.
Best of luck,
