Boiler Recommendation for Radiant Floor Heating
Hi Stan,
I am a colleague of Jackie DeGagne's and she provided your email address as a contact for all things Rummer. My wife and I purchased a Rummer home in Lake Oswego two years ago.
Our boiler that feeds the radiant heat system is in need of replacement. We have interviewed two boiler contractors thus far and thought it would be wise to get an opinion about what other Rummer owners have chosen to do with their boiler replacements. The condensing boiler we have learned is a unique beast among boilers, and there are maybe 3 companies with extensive experience installing these in the greater Portland area. We would appreciate any recommendations you might have on this issue.
Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

Stan,
AS of Oak Hills gave me this reference.
I was looking to replace my original equipment boiler for my radiant floor heating. She thought you might have some good recommendation on who might be best to seek out to do this work. If you have advice I would appreciate any help you can provide. Many thanks.

Use All-Temp Heating and Cooling. They are the only Certified Boiler Replacement
company in the Northwest. If you call, tell them that Tony Lewis referred you.
cheers

NW Natural has high efficency boilers (95%+) much cheaper than what any other company has. I got a quote for $1700 for a Rinnai Q series that also does domestic water. They just got them available through their appliance center and their personnel trained on them, so the price may differ slighty. Most other places I checked wanted $2500-4000 for the same one. NW Natural also has financing which no other place has. Also with all of the rebates they and other agencies offer, the price comes out to around $800-1000.

We had good luck with All Temp Heating replacing our boiler. Not cheap, but it seems to be working very well.
JH, send me an email if you want to look it over.

Hi JH- We had our boiler replaced by Anctil Plumbing a few years ago.
We bought the Munchkin and have had great success with it. Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
LH
I suggest that you call Rainbow Heating 503-656-7437. They specialize in boilers. I purchased a "Munchkin" boiler that is extremely efficient and was eligible for two rebates/tax refunds.

PS Please tell them that I recommended you.

Hi JH,
I have just replaced my old boiler the first part of October of this year – so I don’t have a full heating season of experience to share.
I had Anctil Plumbing do to job. I highly recommend them for the work. Excellent workmanship!!
I'll include the details from the bid less prices, to give you an idea of the details.
Boiler Change Out
-Furnish and install a Munchkin 80M ASME 25,000 to 74,000 BTU 92% efficient gas boiler
-Price includes new fill valve, Grundfos pump and Hersey water meter
-Tie into existing radiant heat system piping in garage
-Use existing gas supply and electrical for new boiler
-Install new PVC venting with concentric vent kit through roof using existing B-Vent
-Price is based on using existing ½” back flow device on feed water line
-Price includes disposal of old boiler
-Price includes State Boiler permit fee and inspection
-Not responsible for any leaks that may occur to existing system piping, manifolds or infloor tubing
OPTION: install Prestige Solo 110 boiler
Munchkin in stock, Solo 110 4-days out from time of order
I chose the option with the Prestige Solo. The Munchkin would sit on small metal table on the floor. The Solo mounts on the wall --- very nice installation. These devices need space underneath for drain pipes, etc. I think the wall mount is a better design.
I added the Hersey water meter. I had seen this idea at another Rummer owner’s boiler upgrade and I like the idea of monitoring any additional water going into the closed heating system. I printed a digital picture of the meter reading and I have it by the boiler - so when that water leak occurs, I should be able it tell quickly which system is leaking.
BTW, the Grundfos pump is the main circulating pump. It is low power pump.
One thing I had going for my installation was that my hot water heater was replaced with an on demand unit. This left only the furnace using the ceiling vent. With the new boiler, the venting is very clean installation because it is not sharing space with the hot water heater.
You are very welcome to come by and see the installation. Just send me an email and we arrange a visit.

Stan, please pass this along:
Hello JH,
One option to consider is a high efficiency WATER HEATER. We replaced our OEM "boiler" with a Polaris water heater 4+ years ago (for about 20% the cost of a new "boiler"), and it is still working great.
Here is an article about it:

If you'd like to talk to me about it, feel free to write or call. I'd do a fewof the details differently today, but I'd do it again...

Stan,
the one that really looks interesting is the one from Russell that uses one heavy duty water heater to supply hot water as well as the hot water for the radiant heat. I'm going to research this one further.
