We had a terrible problem with sugar ants when we moved into our house 40 years ago. It was always worse in the winter months but lingered through out the year. We called Guaranteed Pest Control and they solved the problem. It's important to have regular service though or those little critters will come back. Additionally, if there is any hint of ants between visits they will come out to treat it without charge. It's safe and reasonable, $63 quarterly, and we don't see any ants all year long. The guy who does the application has been with then for years. He does the inside and outside every visit. (By the way, we raised 5 kids here and no problem with the chemicals.)

We've had to battle sugar ants too. They seem to love Rummers as much as we do.
Here's what I did to take them on. Watch them closely to see where they are entering the house. This is where you'll place the bait. The bait is made of Boric acid mixed into a sweet substance like corn syrup or honey. Mix in plenty and mix it well. Place the bait in the area in which they are entering the house.
They'll find the bait and take it back to their nests to feed the colony. They are of course feeding the colony the Boric acid and that will be that. You get the colony, queen and all. This method takes time so you need to be patient. Took us several months to final get them under control.
