Bohmann Park Rummer Tour
UPDATE:
We had over 400 people come through our neighborhood for this MCM event!
So many wonderful comments and a number of people came from out of town as far away as Chicago and Southern California. This shows how popular the style of our architectural homes are. They are featured in Dwell and Atomic Ranch magazines, in the Oregonian to mention a few publications. Thanks to all who participated and for those who were not quite ready, I am sure HPLO will feature our neighborhood again.
The Historic Preservation League of Oregon at historicpreservationleague.org (HPLO) is a non-profit statewide historic preservation organization. The HPLO holds an annual Mid-Century Modern Home Tour to highlight special neighborhoods and houses of that iconic period. Last year's “Mid-Century Marvelous” tour was held in the Oak Hills neighborhood, which brought attention to the Rummer Homes there, and also lent support to the neighborhood's effort opposing the proposed widening of Bethany Blvd. The HPLO has supported the Oak Hills community effort to have Oak Hills listed as an Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. This listing would serve to strengthen the neighborhood's case in dealing with threats such as the widening of Bethany Blvd.
This year, the HPLO would like to showcase the Bohmann Park Neighborhood on home tour scheduled for June 2nd. The tour would educate people about Rummers in the Bohmann Park Neighborhood, and could help support the community's opposition to the proposed sewage pumping station expansion. It could also add credibility should the community pursue historic district status from the National Register of Historic Places. They even have a logo for the tour.
If you have a Rummer home and are interested in opening up your home for this educational tour, please contact your neighbor Stan Houseman ([email protected]). The tour would last from 10am-4pm and you could open up as much, or as little, of your house as you would like. The HPLO is very mindful of your property, has volunteers stationed at each house, and attendees must either remove their shoes or put on "booties" (supplied by HPLO). The Rummer homeowners on the Oak Hills tour last year thoroughly enjoyed the experience. As a bonus for attendees, we have asked Mr. Rummer himself to be stationed at Heather Keithly's house, his former home when he lived in Bohmann Park.
Two members of the HPLO, Jack Bookwalter and Karla Pearlstein, will be in the neighborhood next Saturday afternoon February 11. They would like to meet as many Rummer homeowners as they can. If you’re interested in being on the tour, Stan can set up a time on Saturday for them to visit. Original unaltered Rummer homes are a treasure - but rare. The HPLO does not expect every home on the tour to be completely original. In Oak Hills there were a variety of interior decors and alterations. Please don't hold back submitting your home solely because it is not original to 1969.
Thank you!

Let’s recognize our Historic Garden Home.
If you live in the Garden Home area you may have noticed the new signs. These have been coordinated by the Garden Home History Project. We have five street signs up now: on 90th, 87th, 71st, Arranmore, and Stewart. Five more have been purchased and designated.
This could go a long way to help establish The Rummer homes in the Bohmann / Vista Brook neighborhood to aid in our efforts to stop the continuing effort from Portland to build the Sewage Pump station in Fanno Creek. Oak Hills has a similar struggle with the Bethany Road widening prospect. Oak Hills has gone a further step by applying for a historic designation, too.
On a personal note; I think everyone who owns a Rummer or Mid Century Modern home needs to do what they are able to protect our investment in our home and neighborhood.
They are available for your street for $55.
Send your check to Virginia Vanture, 7655 SW 88th, Portland, OR 97223. Questions to Virginia at [email protected]

Why we love our Rummer Homes
Rummer built home '66
Stunning Mid Century Modern Rummer in fantastic condition! One level open floor plan living located in highly desirable neighborhood. Exposed post and beam, vaulted ceiling, skylights, numerous sliding glass doors and large windows allow for a very open and bright atmosphere. Home revolves either around the central aggregate entry atrium with views from floor to ceiling glass or have an open aggregate gallery with skylights plus includes the living/dining room windows to the backyard which provides a truly open house flooded with light. Exposed aggregate concrete patio extends along the entire length of the rear of the house further expands the living space and blurs the line between the indoor-outdoor view. Step-down Roman shower. Radiant floor heat throughout the home. What's not to love?
